How to keep your house warm this winter

During the winter it’s essential that your home is heated. It’s always advisable to check your home for ways to reduce costs and heat loss. We’ve put together a few tips on how to do so, ensuring your home is winter ready.

INSULATE

Adding the recommended amount of 270mm of Loft insulation could help you save up to £180 per year and reduces the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Cavity wall insulation is another great way to help reserve energy in your home with an annual saving of £140.

KEEP THE HEAT IN WITH DOUBLE GLAZING

Double glazing helps retain heat in your home from escaping outside and in warmer weather can limit the amount of heat from outdoors. An average home loses up to 30% of its heating and cooling energy through air leaks around windows indoors. any leaks should also be repaired and can be fixed with appropriate foams or chalks.

Closing your curtains during the night time can limit draughts and help keep the heat in. If they hang over a radiator, make sure to tuck it behind so the heat can still circulate your room.

KEEP RADIATORS CLEAR

Check your radiators are not blocked by any large objects such as furniture, tables etc. This lets the air circulate freely giving you the full benefit of the warm air and is also safer. If you have any rooms that are not in use, turn down the radiator to the lowest setting and close the doors to save energy.

USE A PREMIUM/ENERGY EFFICIENT OIL

Our Premium kerosene contains components which reduce the build-up of carbon and soot deposits in your central heating boiler. This means that your boiler stays cleaner for longer resulting in increased boiler efficiency, in turn, this lowers your carbon footprint and you can achieve a more complete burn of your fuel which can save you money.

ORDERING YOUR HEATING OIL EARLY

Typically, the price of heating oil lower before winter arrives, making it the best time to stock up for the colder months. Not only do you experience higher prices, but delivery times can also be increased in the wintertime making it more the reason to buy your oil early.

ENSURE YOUR HEATING OIL IS PROTECTED FROM THIEVES

Having a tank which isn’t protected leaves it open to heating oil theft which can be common amongst rural areas. With one in three fuel thefts taking place during the winter months, thieves take advantage of the darker nights and increased prices of oil. THE LITTLE THINGS ADD UP…

When it comes to saving on your heating, it’s the little things that add up. Turning your thermostat down just 1 degree can help reduce your heating bills by 10% every year. Shutting any doors of any rooms that aren’t regularly used. And even if you’re tempted to turn up your heating, always try sticking on that extra layer to warm you up.
